War came to Washington in March of 1862 when Federal troops, escorted by the gunboat Picket, arrived at Washington. Today, crossing the Pamlico River on Highway 17, you can still see the remains of the Picket jutting from the Tar River where it blew up on September 6th, 1862.

Washington's Pamlico/Tar River estuary, the second-largest in the nation, is home to the educational North Carolina Estuarium which features aquariums and exhibits highlighting the coastal rivers and sounds.

Near the Inn you'll find boat rentals, slips, and a full service marina. For landlubbers there are world class golf courses, hiking and biking at Goose Creek State Park, and a marvelous self-guided Washington Walking Tour featuring homes that housed Federal troops during the Civil War.
